CRPropa: A Numerical Tool for the Propagation of UHE Cosmic Rays, γ−rays and Neutrinos

چکیده
To understand the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, defined to be above 10 eV), it is required to model in a realistic way their propagation in the Universe. UHECRs can interact with low energy radio, microwave, infrared and optical photons to produce electron/positron pairs or pions. The latter decay and give rise to neutrinos and electromagnetic cascades extending down to MeV energies. In addition, deflections in cosmic magnetic fields can influence the spectrum and sky distribution of primary cosmic rays and, due to the increased propagation path length, the secondary neutrino and γ−ray fluxes. Neutrino, γ−ray, cosmic ray physics and extra-galactic magnetic fields are, therefore, strongly linked subjects and should be considered together in order to extract maximal information from existing and future data, like the one expected from the Auger Observatory. For that purpose, we have developed CRPropa, a publicly-available numerical package which takes into account interactions and deflections of primary UHECRs as well as propagation of secondary electromagnetic cascades and neutrinos. CRPropa allows to compute the observable properties of UHECRs and their secondaries in a variety of models for the sources and propagation of these particles. Here we present physical processes taken into account as well as benchmark examples; a detailed documentation of the code can be found on our web site. Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos
We discuss the relation between the highest energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and UHE neutrinos. The neutrinos produced in the sources of optically thin astrophysical sources have been linked to the UHECR emissivity of the Universe. The fluxes of cosmogenic neutrinos, generated in propagation by UHECR, also reflect the acceleration of these particles, the maximum acceleration energy, and the cosmologi...
متن کاملEffect of energy losses and interactions during diffusive shock acceleration: applications to SNR, AGN and UHE Cosmic Rays
I discuss the shape of the high energy end of the spectrum of particles arising from diffusive shock acceleration in the presence of (i) additional diffusive escape from the accelerator, (ii) continuous energy losses, (iii) energy changes arising from interactions. The form of the spectrum near cut-off is sensitive to these processes as well as to the momentum-dependence of the diffusion coeffi...
متن کاملProbing Cosmic Accelerators Using VHE Gamma Rays and UHE cosmic rays
The γ-ray emission observed in several classes of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysical sources appears to be linked to accreting black holes and rotational powered neutron stars. These systems are prodigious cosmic accelerators, and are also potential sources of the UHE cosmic rays detected by several experiments and VHE neutrinos. We review a recent progress in our understanding of these o...
متن کاملRadio Detection of UHE-Neutrinos: Cosmic Tracers of the High Energy Universe
Identifying the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays is a fundamental unsolved problem in both high-energy physics and astrophysics. Ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos provide a key probe to the nature and location of cosmic ray engines since they travel essentially unimpeded from their source to our solar system, providing a directional tracer of their origin. The first generation of UHE n...
متن کاملSimulation study of GZK photon fluxes
The composition of ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays E > 10 eV is still unknown. The observation of UHE photons would extend the observed electromagnetic spectrum to highest energy and open a new channel for multimessenger observations in the universe. Current limits on the photon flux already constrain “exotic” scenarios where a large number of photons is expected by the decay products of su...
